Language as the key to grow reciprocity and respect between Indigenous peoples and the Australian science community.

Presenters: Denise Smith-Ali, Nat Raisbeck-Brown

Indigenous engagement projects are highly sought after by government and research organisations. Successful engagement is dependent on reciprocity and respect, which are based on strong and trusted relationships with Indigenous people and communities. The Noongar Boodjar Language Centre in Perth and the CSIRO are working together to collect, protect and share Indigenous ecological knowledge for plants and animals. The Language Centre facilitates the scientist’s interactions with community, and the CSIRO facilitates the community’s interactions with scientists and researchers. Together they have built a safe space for knowledge transfer.
